1989 ESD established as a dedicated sustainable energy company providing world-leading expertise across the sustainable energy technologies of solar, wind, biomass, CHP and small scale hydro and quickly establishes its reputation for innovative, market leading project design and delivery.
  ESD starts World Bank funded energy efficient stove project in East Africa.

1991 ESD selected by European Commission to undertake the first Europe-wide study of renewable energy potential in leading European markets and establishes the benchmark study (TERES) from which future pan-EU and member state policy and market development activities will progress.

1993 ESD develops the SAFIRE computer model for evaluating the environmental, social and economic costs and benefits for different energy development strategies. SAFIRE is now established as the standard framework tool for every EU member state for examining renewable energy market penetration strategies at national, local and corporate levels.

1994 ESD leads European Commission's SPEAR project to develop long term renewable energy plans at local and regional levels in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal and Germany.

1995 ESD leads second EC TERES II assessment and policy study of renewable energy potentials in all 30 European countries and which formed the basis of the EC's White Paper on renewable energy.
  ESD selected by the Bulgarian government to undertake a national assessment of renewable energy potentials.

1997 ESD Bulgaria established.
  ESD begins working with leading corporates in the development of sustainable energy strategies and technology development.
  ESD wins the Shell Worldaware award for Technology and Development for its energy efficient stoves project in Ethiopia described by the World Bank as " a stunning success".

1998 ESD Africa established.
  Expansion of sustainable energy development and rural electrification projects in East and Southern Africa.
  Development of community heating and energy projects in eastern Europe.
  ESD commissioned to develop sustainable energy strategy for Millennium Dome and Village and develop corporate client portfolio with leading companies such as ASDA, Daimler Benz, Wessex Water and Ford UK.
  ESD awarded the Queens Award for Export Achievement.

1999 ESD expands its climate change portfolio and is selected to lead EU post-Kyoto projects for all three of the market mechanisms identified for delivering commercial carbon emissions reduction markets in Europe - Joint Implementation, Clean Development Mechanism and Emissions Trading..
  ESD develops carbon emissions reduction services portfolio for corporate and Local Authority markets.

2000 ESD leads world's largest Joint Implementation project of 48 partners from corporate, government and energy sectors across 14 European countries.
  ESD leads consortium of 27 European electricity companies and specialists to develop tradeable green certificates opportunities across the European carbon market.
  ESD becomes a founding member of the UK Emissions Trading Group.
  ESD leads EU CDM project for developing sustainable carbon market policies in African, Caribbean and Pacific regions.
  ESD commissioned to develop sustainable energy strategy for the City of Bristol.

2001 ESD works with Nottingham Community Housing Association to develop PV roof module project for new build bungalows for the elderly and providing free lighting for residents.
  ESD's growth continues and new offices are established at Rudloe to house expanding ESD team.
  ESD commissioned to undertake the energy and environmental assessment of Hong Kong University students accommodation new build.
  ESD undertakes assessment of renewable energy potentials for the county of Cornwall.

2002 ESD successfully bids two clients into innovative UK Emissions Trading scheme.
ESD JI and CDM low carbon project portfolio expands in Europe and Africa.
  ESD win Hand in Hand Environmental UK Business Award for Renewable Energy companies.
  Installation and monitoring of PV roof systems in Huddersfield, Glasgow, Newcastle and Bristol as part of the DTI's PV Domestic Field Trial.
  ESD works with Housing Corporation to develop RSL opportunities for energy cost savings under the Energy Efficiency Commitment.
  ESD works with Nottingham Community Housing Association to design and develop innovative PV roof systems for the Green Lane new build development which was opened in June and which now provides free lighting for the elderly residents of twenty two homes.
  ESD in partnership with University of Bath and Hartham Park spearhead the development of a South West regional Centre of Excellence for Climate Change Solutions.
  ESD establishes office in London.

2003 ESD facilitates the completion of one of the first emissions reductions purchase agreements for the Prototype Carbon Fund.
  Camco Ltd formed with KWI in Austria to manage carbon assets for a portfolio of projects worldwide.
  ESD complete a review of renewable energy opportunities on ex-coalfield sites for English Partnerships.
  ESD develops a portfolio of 800 kW of solar photovoltaic projects in the UK.
  ESD supports World Bank to develop policies and strategies for rural electrification in Uganda and Zambia.
  ESD wins five carbon management pilot projects funded by the Carbon Trust to help UK corporates develop strategies and plans to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
  ESD completes 14 renewable energy feasibility studies in the UK funded by the Clear Skies programme.
  ESD Biomass formed with Balmyle Ltd

2004 ESD wins contract to develop one of the UK’s first sustainable energy services companies (Mill Energy Services) for Titanic Mill in Yorkshire.
  ESD provides consultancy to the Carbon Trust to work with 23 UK Local Authorities to develop carbon management plans.
  ESD merges with Greenergy Carbon Partners and Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management to create Europe’s largest carbon consultancy.
 

ESD wins five year SIDA funded project with Ministry of Energy and Minerals in Tanzania for commercialising solar PV systems across the country.

 

ESD establishes office in Sheffield.



2005 ESD provides consultancy to the Carbon Trust to work with a further 26 UK Local Authorities and 20 UK universities to develop carbon management strategies and action plans.
  ESD wins a scoping contract with the largest sugar factory in East Africa, to develop an independent power project, power purchase agreement and new revenue streams to realise possibilities in a newly competitive electricity market.
  ESD Biomass secures a commitment from RWE Innogy to provide sustainably grown wood fuel to Didcot power station from 2009.


2006 ESD joint venture Camco International Ltd listed on London Stock Market AIM at a market capitalisation of £83m. Camco builds up one of the World’s largest carbon credit portfolio’s in 2006. ESD Ventures formed with objective of initiating low carbon businesses covering technology, projects and services. ESD & Impact plus wins carbon management contracts to work with 78 local authorities, 35 Universities and 10 NHS Trusts in the UK. Beijing office opened. ESD Tanzania formed.
