LOW CARBON BUSINESS VENTURES
Good Energy
In the run up to the introduction of competition in the UK retail
domestic electricity sector in 1998, ESD helped to establish the
UK's first green power company. Originally called Unit[e], Good
Energy supplies 100% renewable electricity from the natural energy
of wind, sun, or running water. For every unit of electricity used
by a Good Energy customer, Good Energy promises to buy a unit of
electricity from a renewable power source and supply this to the
grid.
Good Energy submits Renewable Obligation Certificates to OFGEM
meeting the small percentage required by the UK government. They
then go beyond this requirement by retiring extra Renewable Obligation
Certificates up to an equivalent of 10%. This creates additional
demand for renewable generation and grows the market as a whole.
As a result, Good Energy's green electricity tariff has been consistently
recommended by Friends of the Earth.
Ambient Energy
Now part of the Novera Energy group, Ambient Energy was established
as an ESD joint venture after its acquisition of the new renewable
energy business previously owned by South Western Electricity in
December 1997. Ambient Energy was a project development company
aiming to develop a range of biomass and wind projects under the
UK's Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation. Prior to its sale to Novera in
2000, Ambient Energy successfully developed the technical design,
power purchase agreement and planning application for a 5 MW biomass-fuelled
power plant located in the east of England.
